Mary Elizabeth Bradford has written a very resourceful, straightforward e-book on resume writing for today's job-search climate. I love the strategies and tips that are used in the book. But even more, the emphasis on a well focused resume while keeping the resume writing process very simple and easy to understand. There are many extras for the jobseeker included with the e-book to complement the resume writing process. As a career services professional, I have outlined the top 10 reasons why I like this particular e-book.

    Number 10 Reason:
Know how to effectively use references, endorsements and testimonials. Mary Elizabeth also talks about how the use LinkedIn to obtain endorsements.

    Number 9 Reason:
Envision your dream job. Using visualization, Mary Elizabeth shows how your dream job can be created from a blank canvas. Imagination is a creative tool that our minds use to develop that necessary foundation and focus from our wants and desires.

    Number 8 Reason:
Don't mention that you were fired or laid off on your resume. This should be handled in preparation for the interview. Mary Elizabeth shows how to effectively and succinctly deal with this potential issue during the interview.

    Number 7 Reason:
Leave out information on your resume that does not apply to your next job. Mary Elizabeth does a good job of showing why it is important that your resume is laser focused to the industry and position that you as a jobseeker are looking for. The resume is a marketing piece and everything on it should be specifically tailored to its central objective.

    Number 6 Reason:
Organize the text so that the resume is easy to read. Mary Elizabeth has custom-designed resume templates to utilize white space correctly. By creating a simpler resume, the easier it will be to read and sharpen the impact that your accomplishments will have to a potential employer.

    Number 5 Reason:
Understand the differences between a chronological, functional, and hybrid resume design. It is very important to know which you should use and when you should use each type.

    Number 4 Reason:
Understand the importance of using the Value Proposition Letter. Why to use the VPL instead of a standard cover letter so that your skills and accomplishments are actually noticed as an introduction to your resume.

    Number 3 Reason:
Emphasize and quantify your accomplishments. Mary Elizabeth shows you how to structure these statements in a way that will emphasize the end result first and capture the employer's interest in you as a jobseeker.

    Number 2 Reason:
Develop your brand. What is that combination of professional skills and personal attributes unique to you that will solve the employer's problem and effectively communicate your value?

    And the number one reason:

    Number 1 Reason:
Target your resume with bull's-eye precision. By focusing one's resume on a very specific market and position, the result will almost always be a short job search to obtain the position you are looking for. A wider net does not necessarily catch more fish!

The 21st Century Resume Guide For The Perplexed by Mary Elizabeth Bradford is an excellent, valuable resource - well worth the very reasonable price. The book is truly a "guide", not just a collection of hints and tips. It leads you through the process of creating an effective resume, starting at the very beginning with the author's advice that you think thoroughly about exactly what position you want to fill, and what type of work you are uniquely suited for, before you try to write a resume. She then goes on to provide exercises to help you clarify what your career goals are, what motivates you, what your dream job would look like, and so on. Once these questions are answered, Ms Bradford provides some very practical techniques to help you brand yourself and highlight what is unique about you, thus creating a resume that stands out.

Before I read this book, I had a resume which I thought was pretty decent. Reading the book caused me to spend several days re-writing my resume. I have since taken it to a recruiter, who told me that it is 100% better. This is great confirmation that the book is right on track, but I feel that the improved resume is almost secondary to some of the other take-aways that I got from the book -- specifically, working out what I really want to do, and how I can market myself for my dream job, is incredibly valuable. Thank you, Ms. Bradford!
